What brands really look for when they choose creators

Follower count is only part of it. The signals that make a brand pick one creator over another, and how to show them.

If you are on the creator side, it helps to know what is on the other side of the table. Brands are trying to reduce risk: they want a creator whose audience trusts them, who delivers on time and whose content fits the brand.

The signals

  • Audience fit: are your followers the people the brand wants to reach?
  • Engagement: do people react, comment and save, not only watch?
  • Content quality: is the video clear, well lit and easy to follow?
  • Reliability: do you meet deadlines and follow the brief?
  • Brand safety: is your content consistent with the brand's values?

How to show them

Put these in your media kit: a short description of your audience, your engagement rate on recent posts, two or three examples that match the brand's style and a line on how you work. Be honest about your numbers. Brands check, and a small honest creator beats a large inflated one.
