How to build a UGC portfolio when you have no clients yet

You do not need a brand deal to show brands what you can do. Five sample videos you can film this week with products you already own.

Every brand asks to see your work. Every new creator has none. It feels like a trap, but it is not. A UGC portfolio is a handful of videos that show how you would make content for a brand, and nothing says a brand has to have paid for them.

Use what is already in your home

Pick products you actually use: a face cream, a water bottle, a coffee grinder, a phone case. Film them the way you would for a paying client. Brands are not looking for famous names here. They want to see that you can make a clear, believable video of a product.

Five samples that cover the basics

  • A hook-first talking video. Open with the problem in one sentence, then show the product solving it.
  • A hands-only demo. No face, just your hands using the product, with a short line of text on screen.
  • A before and after, if the product allows it.
  • An unboxing, filmed from the moment you pick up the package.
  • A short review that includes one honest downside. It reads as real, and brands know it.

Keep each one short

Fifteen to thirty seconds is enough. A portfolio is watched quickly, often on a phone, by someone with a pile of creators to go through. Put your strongest video first. If a clip is weak, leave it out. Three good samples beat seven uneven ones.

Make it easy to look at

You do not need a website. A single page with your videos, a two-line bio and an email address is enough. A pinned folder on your profile, a shared drive link or a simple link page all work. Check that the link opens without a login and plays on a phone.

Add one line under each video: what the product was, what the brief would have been, what you delivered. It shows you think like someone who works with brands.

Be honest about what they are

Call them sample videos. Do not present them as paid work and do not use a brand's logo as if you had a deal. Brands check, and being straight with them costs you nothing.

Then replace them

Your first real job is the best thing that can happen to this page. Swap the weakest sample for it as soon as you can. Keep adding, and keep the page short.
